What Tally stores
Tally is a calorie tracker. To work, it stores the following in a database hosted in Amsterdam:
- Your email address, and your password as a one-way hash — never as readable text.
- Your display name, if you set one.
- Your calorie, protein, carbohydrate, fat and fibre targets.
- Your timezone, language, units preference, and country if you set one.
- Everything you log: foods, dates, meals and portion sizes.
- Foods, recipes and meal templates you create yourself.
What Tally does not do
- No advertising, and no advertising identifiers.
- No third-party analytics or tracking SDKs.
- No selling or sharing of your data with anyone, for any purpose.
- No location tracking. Tally never asks for your location.
- No health or fitness data read from your device. Tally does not connect to Apple Health.
The camera
The barcode scanner uses your camera to read a barcode and nothing else. Frames are processed on your device and are never uploaded or stored. Only the resulting barcode number is sent to look the product up.
Who else sees anything
Tally uses two public food databases. When you search for a food or scan a barcode, that search text or barcode number is sent to them so they can answer. Neither receives your email address or anything else about you.
- Open Food Facts — an open food database. Used for searches and all barcode lookups.
- USDA FoodData Central — the US government food database. Used for searches.
Beyond those, two service providers process data on Tally's behalf: Fly.io hosts the application and its database, and Google delivers Tally's account emails (sign-up confirmation, password resets), which means your email address passes through it.
Emails you get
Only account emails: confirming your address, verifying an email change, and resetting your password. Tally sends no marketing email.
Deleting your account
Settings → Delete account removes your account immediately and permanently. That deletion cascades: your profile, every food you logged, and every custom food, recipe and meal template you created are erased along with it. Nothing is retained in a soft-deleted or archived state, and there is no undo. Foods that came from Open Food Facts or USDA stay in Tally's shared food database, since they were never yours to begin with.

Children
Tally is not intended for children under 13, and is not directed at them.
Changes
If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it.
